How to get there?

Gili Trawangan is located at latitude: -8.3500 and 116.0333 longitude. A 30-minute boat ride from Lombok mainland to the northwest will take you to Gili Trawangan.

By plane

No domestic flight from Bali that lands on Gili Trawangan but luxury travelers can chart a helicopter and avoid all the hassle of queuing for a spot in a boat. The closest airport to Gili Trawangan is the Lombok airport called Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport (ZAMIA). Lombok airport has Visa on Arrival facility for foreign passports and the international flight options include Air Asia, Silk Air and Garuda Airlines.

By ferry/boat

From Lombok, you can choose a public or private boat that departs from Bangsal Harbor. If you happen to stay in Senggigi, it takes up to 20 minutes of motorbike-ride to Bangsal. Public boat gets over-capacity most of the time because it’s a public transportation for the locals. People sitting on the boat’s floor is quite a common sight but it’s definitely a good way to experience the local culture. For backpackers, the public boat is a budget-friendly ride but for those with extra luggage, you may need to pay certain amount of service fee to carry your things. Fast boat from Lombok offers more choices of boat service and depart from three spots – Bangsal, Teluk Kodek and Teluk Nara. The boats from Bali to Gili Trawangan depart from Padang Bai and Amed with tickets available for advance booking through travel agents. From Amed, the trip takes approximately 45 minutes long whilst departing from Padang Bai can take up to 1,5 hours.

What to see?

The days can be as busy as the nights at Gili Trawangan. It was just a destination for backpackers but today, the vibe keeps getting higher and luxury resorts are well established along with the private pools, private docks, top notch amenities and of course, beautiful beachfront view. You can expect aspiring menus from the huge selections of restaurants and bars. Not to mention, the no-vehicle rule makes this island unpolluted and clean.

Exploring Gili Trawangan diving sites require a long checklist and here are the best spots to dive:
  • Manta point, is located at the South of Gili Trawangan. It’s a perfect site for beginners with a wide array of species to witness, such as, sting rays, manta rays and also, the beautiful soft corals.
  • Stingray, just like the name of the diving site, Stingray is a slope with lots of reef fish down under. It is also one of the coral rehabilitation site and it’s where a number of huge stingrays swim around.
  • Shark point, the underwater canyons are the home to cuttlefish and reef sharks. Shark point is further deep with sandy bottom.
  • Halik, this northern part of Gili Trawangan is for all types of divers. You can find a huge amount of turtles and colorful corals. This is the dive site that enables you to see a great number of species living side by side including lion fish, octopus, moray, snappers and barrel sponges.


Big swells and elusive wave – even the sea is giving a challenge to the surfers in Gili Trawangan. Every day is always a great day to surf. For beginners the less crowd gives a lot of chance to ride whilst for the pros, the quality of the breaks offer a unique experience.

Biking around the island

It’s so easy to find a bicycle rental that you can use for the whole day wandering around the island. All you need to do is bring backpack, some snacks, a bottle of drink and your snorkeling equipment – and you’re ready to start your adventure.

Horse cart taxis

Yes, apparently the Roman-like chariots are used despite the fact that it’s an act of animal cruelty. Often called Ben Hur or Cidomo, the horse drawn carriage is one of the transportations allowed in Gili Trawangan. You’ll see them in the busy streets, being exploited day and night. As a responsible tourist, you can refuse to ride the carriage because it’s contributing to the endless abuse.

Budget Hotels

Dozens of homestays and guesthouses with fan-cooled rooms or full air con are available around Gili Trawangan and some of them are close to main attractions. Blue Moon Homestay for instance, is a few minute walk to the beach. It’s got spacious rooms with off-white walls and nice bedroom settings.

There’s also an Irish bar by the beach that pumps till 2 am. Gili Trawangan’s nightlife mostly happen at the beach strip.
