Next part of our Thousand Islands series is Pulau Bidari. Don’t mistaken this Bidadari with the one in Labuan Bajo. Bidadari island is part of thousands island cluster that features iconic cottages, wonderful nature sceneries and a historic fort.
Bidadari was previously named PulauSakit (Sick Island) due to the leper colony. Not long after, the Dutch made it Batavia´s first line of defense against marauders. Fast forward, Taman Impian Jaya Ancol has transformed the area into a beautiful and positive vibe of a modern getaway.
Bidadari literally means Angel and the island lives up to its name. The angelic destination gives you a great break from the noisy Jakarta. It´s almost like you´re casted out from an urban living, to a traditional village with less air pollution and no skyscraper to block your view of an exotic sunset.
Where is it and how to get there
The most common way to reach the stunning beach is by taking a traditional boat ride at an affordable price. There are also, speedboats to make your trip a lot quicker from MuaraAngkeand even quicker from Marina Ancol, it takes 30 minutes. All boats go back and forth during the day but be sure to arrive earlier than the others to secure your seat.
What to see and do
- Island hopping
Feel the ocean spirit as you cruise around the island and explore the neighboring areas such as Onrust, Khayangan and Kelor with a traditional boat.
- Sun bathing
Sunbathing and swimming are the most popular activities in Bidadari during summer. The resort provides pool chairs for sunbathing or reading time. You might also want to bring your floaties with you.
The beach and the sea are often fully packed with visitors. Bidadari offers Bali beach-like adventures from snorkeling, canoeing, jet skiing to banana boat riding.
- Snorkeling and diving
The remnants of Mortello fort can still be witnessed today. It was built during the Dutch colonialism in the 17th century to protect and watch over Onrust island. It was badly damaged after Krakatoa mountain explosion Today, the landmark is a famous site for pre-wedding photoshoots!
- Photo hunting
Bidadari is absolutely photogenic in many angles, and Instagramable too!
- Fresh seafoods
The coastal nuance is a perfect setting to enjoy fresh fish and other catches prepared deliciously from the hot smoking grill.
Where to stay
Bidadari island is a more upscale option compared to the other clusters in thousand islands. After being renovated some time ago, Bidadariresort is now packed with full amenities and facilities with over 40 cottages to choose from. Bidadari island usually gets crowded with groups of visitors who attend corporate events in the resort during the weekends. It is recommended to contact the hotel first and arrange your stay long before deciding to travel there.
